The Personal Learning Space

A personal learning environment involves a learning space where the learners take control of their own learning. Within this personal learning space, aspects such as self-direction, self-efficiency and reflection are all detrimental to the success of this learning space (Kop and Fournier, 2010). Ramsden (2011) too backs up this importance, stating that “independence, control and engagement” are the key to effective teaching and learning. In correlation to these notions, a classroom, as in an environment with both students and one or more teachers, should incorporate direction from the teachers, but should ultimately allow the students to get engaged with the content in a way that is fitting for them (Ramsden, 2011).

Candy (1991) explores the notion of self-direction, stating that there are 4 aspects that contribute. A personal attribute, which could relate to their personal views or likes, the willingness and capacity to conduct their own learning, the way in which they organize their learning, and finally they have to need to have a want to pursuit this learning. Correspondingly, Bandura (1997) states that that "the belief in one’s capabilities to organize and execute the courses of action required to manage prospective situations."

Another important aspect to consider is the way in which a personal learning space may involve working with others. Things such as a community of practice, which can be either in person or online (discussed more in the E-Space section) and a PLN (Personalized Learning Network), both of these forms allowing not only just students but also teachers to work at their own pace and level, and customize what and how they learn. PLN’s will be further discussed in the E-Space section, however it is important to note how beneficial this is in relation to teachers especially.

Ultimately, if you give a student a project that involves creating an oral presentation on a sport, and the child both dislikes speaking in front of crowds and sports, they child will not learn as well. Creating an environment where the child is able to take control of their learning in a way that suits their individual learning capabilities will be most beneficial.

Benefits for teachers:
Enables them to see each child’s interests

In terms of a teachers learning space, aspects such as a PLN can enable them to learn themselves, in a context or area that is relevant to them

Enables better contact between student/teacher, and the education is less teacher-centred.

Benefits for students:
Students work at their own pace

Encouraging for students

Allows a student to become accountable for his or her own learning, teaching independence

Negatives for teachers:
Extra preparation is sometimes necessary

Some students don’t have that self motivation

Rearranging the classroom to accommodate for individual learning

Negatives for students:

Have to be motivated to achieve success

Need to portray Candy’s (1991) 4 aspects of self-direction
